Texas WR Johntay Cook no longer with program
Texas Longhorns receiver Johntay Cook II (1) celebrates a touchdown catch during the game against UTSA at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024. Former five-star wideout Johntay Cook is no longer with No. 5 Texas, coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed Thursday.
The 6-foot sophomore from DeSoto, Texas, is moving on after 20 games with the Longhorns in what Sarkisian called a mutual decision.
"We have nothing but respect for he and his family," Sarkisian said during a videoconference. "We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors."
Cook was the No. 3 wideout and No. 29 player nationally by the 247Sports composite in the Class of 2023.
Cook last played in the Oct. 12 win against rival Oklahoma. He caught eight passes for 137 yards and two scores in six games this season for the Longhorns (7-1, 3-1 Southeastern Conference).
Cook appeared in 14 games as a freshman in 2023, catching just eight passes for 136 yards.
He compiled 2,965 receiving yards and 50 touchdowns in his final three seasons at DeSoto High School, winning a state championship as a senior.
Underclassmen are not eligible to enter the NCAA transfer portal until Dec. 9.
